CON DIDN’T know what would happen now. He stayed close to Quincy, eyeing the many werewolves and regular wolves standing in a close circle around them. He readied his wings, prepared to launch at a moment’s notice if any wolf decided he looked like a snack. The bullet had skimmed him, the silver tip burning his feathers. The pain had taken him off guard, and his body had gone into shock, causing him to faint and fall from the sky. Silver could be fatal to shape-shifters, his parents had taught him that well. His body ached, and he’d landed on his wing wrong, but other than that, he was fine.

To say he was stunned by Quincy’s actions was an understatement. Quincy had saved his life, he didn’t doubt that. What happened after he’d fallen and before he’d awakened, he didn’t know, but he could guess. He’d assumed Quincy would see the logic in him leaving and leading the witch away from him and his pack. But Quincy seemed intent on protecting him, and that alone touched his heart. No one had taken a positive interest in him since his parents. He admired Quincy and was flattered by his attention.

He knew it had been foolish to attack Blackburn so openly, but his falcon had taken control, his instinct to protect had taken over his rational mind. She would have killed Quincy or worse, tortured him for information. He’d seen that light in her eyes, the light he’d seen when she’d tortured his parents. He couldn’t bear to let such a thing happen again, but his actions had once again jeopardized the one he wanted most to protect. His presence would strain Quincy’s relationship with his pack, and he desperately didn’t want that. He knew how important family was to Quincy. He should leave, it would make things easier, but Quincy seemed to want him to stay. Conflicted, Con continued to stand behind Quincy, wondering what his pack would do.

A female werewolf approached them and shifted, the air shimmering around her as pale skin replaced dark fur. She knelt, her eyes narrowed in fury. Quincy shifted as well but slower, and he let out a large gasp of pain, planting his hands flat on the ground, his body sagging. His weak leg was set in an awkward angle, and Con observed that it was skinnier than his healthy one, as well as colored slightly different.

“You exposed us,” the female growled, and Con concluded that she was Quincy’s alpha. Her eyes were snapping with barely restrained rage, her muscles tense and pulsing. Con trembled, his instincts screaming at him to leave.

“She knew what we were, my lady,” Quincy said, his voice filled with pain but also determination. He kept his head bowed, his eyes to the ground. “She knows about shape-shifters and bears no love for us. She came here to capture the falcon and—”

“Tell me what is he to us that you would risk your life? The life of your pack?”

“He protects an object that can destroy all shape-shifters.
